How Much Does A Body Camera Cost

New Concord Chief Mindy Peck and Officer Eric Gregg and the rest of the New Concord Police Department wear body cameras as part of their every day equipment.

ZANESVILLE - As Ohio pushes for more body-worn camera usage in police force enforcement, i of Muskingum Canton'south largest constabulary enforcement agencies sees its value but worries about costs.

"I'yard a huge proponent of body cameras," Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said. "There's but so much involved that people don't take time to retrieve about and understand."

When a law enforcement agency buys body-worn cameras, they're not just purchasing the devices. Thousands of dollars will follow to store footage in the cloud and hire actress personnel to handle public records.

While other pocket-size local agencies take them, equipping the sheriff's 31 main response and 12 school resource officers is a harder bet. According to Zanesville Constabulary Chief Tony Coury, the same goes for his 56-officeholder force.

Push for bodycam investment

Gov. Mike DeWine'due south two-year upkeep proposal includes $ten million for torso-worn cameras at local constabulary enforcement agencies. The Ohio Firm version passed Wednesday doesn't include a trunk photographic camera fund.

Also a federal stimulus bill is giving funding to local governments. Zanesville will have nearly $v million and the county more than $17 1000000. Although that's a 1-time deal, non sustained.

"Whether you like it or not, law enforcement is held to a higher standard," Lutz said. "I don't call back the public can accept trust in their agencies unless in that location's transparency ... and they tin be confident that they're doing things the right way."

The state has acknowledged that long-term costs exist — grant funding could pay for additional personnel and associated tech — but it hasn't said that it volition help departments sustain long-term investments that torso cameras come with.

A body cam is standard equipment for officers at the New Concord Police Department.

If the county was able to earmark that funding for the future then Lutz would like to have trunk cameras for deputies. He hasn't read linguistic communication in the stimulus bill or suggest country grants, although he said the fact that grant funding is at present available hasn't shifted his thinking on making a purchase only all the same. He cited past law enforcement grants that were not sustainable in the long run.

Ohio agencies aren't required to equip officers with body cameras, simply there'southward been a push button to apply them to provide more transparency to the public following nationwide protests against police force brutality.

New Agree Police Chief Mindy Peck does random audits of her own officers' footage to ensure they are following policy. "With today'due south times ... as law enforcement officers, y'all have a lot of power," she said. "You have to exist transparent with people. You accept to allow them know, we took an oath (to protect them)."

Axon body cameras can range anywhere from $449 to $649 — plus boosted accessory costs — and cameras should exist replaced every 5 years or so. Although the Cloud storage is the biggest expense.

Zanesville Police force Section has nearly 60 officers. "There's a lot of what-ifs," Coury said. "How tin nosotros afford it, and how tin can we exercise it on a budget?"

Other ways to be transparent

ZPD officers wear audio recorders that should sink up with dashboard cameras. Although that'due south as well not a foolproof system — sometimes they don't connect, the sound might exist off, or the officer may take failed to put on the recorder, Coury said.

Frazeysburg too has bodycams for its agency, Assistant Prosecutor John Litle said.

South Zanesville police used to take VCR dashcams, although the VCR applied science became out of date and they could no longer apply it. Chief Marker Ross said the village is in discussions with the sheriff's office to look into the grants, an expense that would be much small for the force of two full-time employees.

If long-term resources become bachelor Lutz would have cameras for his officer.

"I wouldn't know of a police force enforcement agency that wouldn't get trunk cameras" if all the necessary resource were available,  he said.

Co-ordinate to Peck, it's been worth the investment.

"If you want the community'due south support, you take to be transparent," she said.
