"Cogito, ergo sum; I think, therefore I am."
- Philosopher René Descartes

The Thinker, sometimes called Poet or Poet/Thinker, is a famous statue of a man in deep reflection. He has his hand to his chin, much as does the character in this drawing guide. The sculpture was made by French artist Auguste Rodin in 1880.

Today, many casts or models of the sculpture are housed in museums around the world.

The Thinker is a recognizable piece that is often replicated in popular culture. It has become the archetype or "everyman" of deep thought and contemplation.

The statue was originally part of a project called "Gates of Hell," a doorway for a Paris museum.

It was based on Dante's Inferno, and "The Thinker" was to be Dante himself. His lack of distinguishing garb, though, "marked him as a universal embodiment of every poet — every creator — who draws new life from the imagination."

The sculptor Rodin described his creation in this way: "What makes my Thinker think is that he thinks not only with his brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils and compressed lips, but with every muscle of his arms, back, and legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes."

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Thinking Face

Thinking Face drawing - step 1
How to Draw a Thinking Face Step 01

1. Begin by drawing the eyes. For one eye, draw a curved line to indicate the furrowed brow, then enclose a partial circle below it. For the other, draw a circle. When the line meets itself at the top of the circle, allow one side to extend past the other, again contouring the brow bone.

Then, draw a small circle inside each eye to indicate the pupils.

2. Draw the features of the face. Enclose a teardrop-shaped brow above each eye. Notice that one sweeps across the face at a diagonal angle, while the other is arched like a rainbow. Use curved lines to contour the brows and draw the nose and nostril.
